Oslo Accords

The Oslo Accords, a pair of agreements between the PLO and Israel signed in 1993 and 1995, led to mutual recognition and outlined a framework for the eventual creation of a Palestinian State. In the interim, the Palestinian Authority (PA) was established to provide limited self-government in parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The West Bank was divided into three areas, only one of which (Area A) was exclusively under PA control for both administration and security. The agreements deferred negotiations on the most important and difficult issues: the Israeli settlements, Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees, and borders.
